Smuggler’s Lullaby

Lullaby, oh lullaby.
Oh lullaby, oh lullaby, oh lullaby.
Lullaby, oh lullaby.
Oh lullaby, oh lullaby, oh lullaby.
1

Lullaby, sleep, my baby.
Your dad has a sack on his shoulders,
and he clambers at night.
Pray to the moon not to get him caught,
pray to the star to watch where he goes,
pray to the path to get him back home to me.

Lullaby, oh lullaby.
Oh lullaby, oh lullaby, oh lullaby.
Lullaby, oh lullaby.
Oh lullaby, oh lullaby, oh lullaby.

Lullaby, sleep, my baby.
Your dad has a sack on his shoulders,
full of many things:
it has his courage in it,
it has his fear in it,
and the words he can’t say.

Lullaby, oh lullaby.
Oh lullaby, oh lullaby, oh lullaby.
Lullaby, oh lullaby.
Oh lullaby, oh lullaby, oh lullaby.

Lullaby, sleep, my baby,
so that you’ll dream of a sack on your shoulders,
to clamber after your dad.
In this life that we live clandestinely,
in this life that we dream clandestinely,
in this night that we pray clandestinely,
pray the Lord under your breath,
with his pack basket shaped like a cross.
2
Pray the Lord under your breath,
with his pack basket shaped like a cross.

Lullaby, oh lullaby.
Oh lullaby, oh lullaby, oh lullaby.
Lullaby, oh lullaby.
Oh lullaby, oh lullaby, oh lullaby.

  • 1. ninna nanna = lullaby.
nanna is baby talk for “sleep”.
    ninnare = to cradle.
“Ninna nanna, ninna oh” is a line used in many lullabies.
  • 2. In the crucifix, Jesus seems to be carrying the cross on his shoulder, with great effort, not unlike the way the smuggler carry their bricolla.
